The Tools

The starter tools

This picture shows the basic starter tool kit needed for doing hard rock sculpture. A chisel, mallet and angle grinder equipped with a masonary and/or diamond edged cutter are the basic tools. Some chalk and a hammer with changeable edges for texture are useful additions.

Essential Safety Gear

Carving Andesite rock exposes the sculptor to noisy tools, a fine silicon dust and flying chips so it is essential that safety gear be used at all times when working the rock. The stone is worked out in the open, so protection against the sun is also important. Good solid shoes which are closed over the toes are also recommended

Overalls (optional) are often used by sculptors to give good cover and protect from dust.

Basic Air tools Kit

There are various specialist air tools available for sculpting but standard air tools are fine and may be picked up from any handyman supplier.
