ARTISTS CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
1. PROCESS
- The Symposium will be held in New Zealand on the New Plymouth Foreshore from Saturday 30 December 2017 commencing with a formal Maori powhiri (welcome ceremony) to Friday 19 January 2018. Sculpting will start on Sunday 31 December 2017. An exhibition of works will be held 21 - 27 January concluding with a public auction of works.
- Symposium participants are expected to contribute positively and collaboratively to the Symposium experience.
- 25 sculptors will be selected by the selection committee. A decision will be made by 15 June 2017 and ALL applicants will be advised. The decision of the selection committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- The medium for Te Kupenga Symposia is Taranaki Andesite, a hard volcanic stone, supplied by Te Kupenga and presented in rough boulders of approximately 0.5 to 1 m3 each.
- No personal technical assistants are used at this Symposium. Artists do their own work.
- The Symposium takes place in a public space. Respect for the public and adherence to the New Zealand health and safety regulations are essential. Further information will be given on acceptance.
- Artists must comply with the local District Council by-laws which include a ban on smoking and alcohol at the Foreshore site.
- A Catalogue of Works will be published after the Symposium and a free copy will be posted to each participating artist. Further copies may be purchased.
2. ACCOMMODATION & TRAVEL
- All travel expenses are the responsibility of the participating artist.
- Te Kupenga will provide accommodation free of charge for international artists only. National and local artists are to make their own arrangements.
- Lunches will be provided on site for all artists. Dinner will be provided for International artists only.
3. COMMITMENT
- Artists will undertake to attend for the full three weeks of the Symposium (Saturday 30 December 2017 to Friday 19 January 2018) including the opening and closing ceremonies.
- New Zealand artists will pay a $150 commitment fee on acceptance. International artists are exempt from this fee.
- All international artists must send proof of travel bookings by 1 September at the latest. Any artist not providing this proof will be automatically replaced by a sculptor on the reserve list.
4. TOOLS
- All artists must bring their own tools and safety equipment. Further details will be supplied to successful applicants.
- International artists only will be provided with a 230 mm and 125 mm angle grinder for use during the Symposium.
- A storage container for tools is available on site.
- Electric power, water and compressed air will be supplied on site by Te Kupenga.
- Lifting equipment will be provided on site for artists to use.
4. EXHIBITION & AUCTION
- A public outdoor exhibition of works completed during the Symposium will be held on the New Plymouth Foreshore from Saturday 20 January 2018 for one week, ending with a public auction on the afternoon of Saturday 27 January 2018.
- Artists agree, on accepting a place in the Symposium, that their finished works (maximum of two) will be available for the Foreshore exhibition and that images of their work at the Symposium may be used by Te Kupenga without charge on the website, in the Catalogue of Works and other publicity.
- There will be no pre-auction sales or commissions allowed. Further details about the conditions for exhibition and auction will be sent to successful applicants.
5. COMMISSION
- All work made at the Symposium will be offered for sale at the auction. 20% commission is payable to the Te Kupenga Society when sold either at the auction or for up to 12 months after the Symposium.
6. UNSOLD WORK
- Any sculpture not sold at auction may be removed by the artist OR stored at the Te Kupenga Stone Sculpture Society club site for up to one year, where it will be for sale to the public on behalf of the artist. After 12 months, unless removed, it becomes property of Te Kupenga Stone Sculpture Society.
